Bristol UNESCO City of Film

Cinema Rediscovered 2022

Season

Please note : this season finished in July 2022

We explore local connections to celebrate Bristol’s status as UNESCO City of Film, a global recognition of the city's outstanding contribution to film culture.

We put the spotlight on Bristol born film director J. Lee Thompson (1914 – 2002) with a 60th anniversary screening of cult classic Cape Fear (1962), the gripping and tension-laden original thriller which famously went on to be remade by Martin Scorsese. We also present Georg Jacoby’s The Joker, a highly entertaining thrill ride starring Weston-Super-Mare born Henry Edwards as the charismatic ‘joker’; a character very much cut from the same cloth as Ian Fleming’s very own James Bond.

Key locations for film in the city will be brought to life as local film enthusiast and historian Mark Fuller (South West Silents) takes visitors on walking tours around the town centre to take in the landmarks and personalities of cinema from the 1880s to the present day, revealing a rich cinematic history of Bristol.
